FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do US companies need Safety Data Sheets?

Yes. Under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200), chemical manufacturers, importers, and distributors must prepare and distribute a Safety Data Sheet for every hazardous chemical they produce or import. The SDS must follow the 16-section GHS-aligned format.

Are EU SDS valid in the United States?

Not directly. While both EU CLP and US OSHA HazCom implement the UN GHS, the US version uses different defaults (no signal word in some cases, US-specific exposure limits, no UFI, no EU emergency number). A US-targeted SDS must be authored or adapted specifically for OSHA compliance.

What is OSHA HazCom 2012?

OSHA HazCom 2012 is the US implementation of GHS. It standardised hazard classification, label elements, and the 16-section SDS format across the United States. The standard was updated in 2024 to align with GHS Revision 7.

Can Chemply prepare US SDS for products manufactured in Europe?

Yes. We routinely adapt EU-format SDS for US distribution — re-classifying under US-specific rules, updating exposure limits (OSHA PELs, ACGIH TLVs, NIOSH RELs), removing EU-only fields, and adding US transport (DOT) information.

How long does a US SDS take?

Standard US SDS authoring is delivered in 48–72 hours from receipt of full composition. Adaptation of an existing EU SDS is typically faster — often within 48 hours.
